Applicants Sought for Position of ASEH Executive Director

The American Society for Environmental History (ASEH) seeks an executive director who will provide vision, leadership, and management for a nonprofit professional and scholarly association. The executive director represents, and advocates for, the interests of environmental history and environmental historians in international, national, state, and local settings; coordinates the work of staff and committees to create programs, services, and publications for the environmental history community; organizes the annual conference; develops projects and internships for graduate students and emerging scholars; and stays abreast of current developments in environmental history and related fields and disciplines. The executive director also seeks to diversify and strengthen the membership, the organization, and the field through effective communication; business, financial, and staff management; nonprofit administration; relationship building; and collaborative initiatives.

ASEH seeks a committed, experienced environmental historian and administrator for this full-time position and encourages applications from individuals with varied professional backgrounds. Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience. We welcome innovative location and university support arrangements.

The executive director will be an independent contractor with an initial four-year term (subject to annual review) and with opportunity for renewal.

Requirements: Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  1. Excellent leadership, managerial, planning, website management, and administrative skills, as well as strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  2. The ability to be an articulate advocate for ASEH, its membership, and environmental history at the international, federal, state, and regional levels and across the profession.
  3. Commitment to outreach and diversity.

Preferences: ASEH prefers but does not require evidence of the following:

  1. A graduate degree in environmental history or a related field.
  2. Previous experience with ASEH and its conferences and other activities.
  3. A record of outstanding administrative management, conference planning and communications skills including use of social media.
  4. A record of leadership and experience in non-profit board relations, management, and development.

The application file should include

1) a detailed letter of interest that describes:

  1. the candidate’s qualifications for the position;
  2. the candidate’s vision for ways the executive director can help the society achieve its goals; and
  3. the candidate’s ideas for outreach to under-represented groups.

2) a CV (with the names, affiliations, emails, and phone numbers of 3 persons willing to provide a reference).
